Lumbar Microdiscectomy

A lumbar microdiscectomy is performed for a herniated disc, commonly referred to as a “slipped disc”, and the procedure involves removing the portion that is irritating or compressing the nerve root. The procedure is performed through an incision in the midline of the lower back. The sac containing nerve roots and cerebrospinal fluid is mobilised and the disc material is removed using an operating microscope.
